In Tagalog para mas may feelings!

First time ito. At bakit nga ba ngayon nagta-Tagalog ako?

Image from Heneral Luna FB page

May bloopers pa nga ako the first time I heard about this film!

Image from Heneral Luna Meme FB page. Paolo Avelino as Gregorio del Pilar.

Nakakahiya, kahit noon pa man favorite subject ko ang History (Ito ata yung subject na enjoy ako mag-aral at excited mag-exam. Mag-memorize na ko for this kesa sa sumagot ako ng problem solving at kung anu-ano pang equations!), hindi naging popular si Heneral Luna sa'kin. Kaya bago ko panoorin ung pelikula, I made a personal research about Antonio Luna, the Philippine-American War and some tidbits about our politics during that time.

Image from Heneral Luna Meme FB page.

I believe the minds behind this movie took that creative liberty para mas um-appeal sya sa masa at lalo na sa kabataan), maganda cinematography, panalong lines, magandang casting, etc. Pero mas naging makabuluhan sya dahil pinakita nya yung several negative cultures of us Filipinos na kailangan nang bigyan pansin dahil mula noon hanggang ngayon, hindi pa rin nababago. Bakit? Anyare ba?

Hehe. Image from Heneral Luna Meme FB page.

Kanya-kanya na 'to
I remember back when I was still in grade school in our Hekasi class. Our teacher asked the class, after we had a run down of all our presidents from Aguinaldo down to Ramos (the Philippine president during that time) and yung mga naging plataporma nila. And I remember walang nakasabi ng saktong sagot sa class namin nun. The answer that our teacher was expecting is, iba-iba kasi ung mga plataporma ng bawat presidente. Ung wala bang continuity? Pero when something goes wrong, no one wants to take responsibility. Blame game it is.

Na-connect talaga yung traffic sa Manila sa movie eh no? Haha! Image from Heneral Luna Meme FB page.

Here's one of his writings about his dismay on Aguinaldo's leadership. He eventually left his post as the Prime Minister before Gen. Luna's death. Read on. Sounds familiar 'di ba?

Image credit to the owner :) Hindi man sya makatayo, Mabini have brains.

Wala kayo sa lolo ko!
Divide and conquer. Mascardo at Gen. Luna. Isama mo na rin ang crab mentality that was also shown in the movie. Totoo yung sinabi sa Bible sa Mark 3:25, "And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand."

Bigyan ng kabaong! Hehe :) Image from Heneral Luna Meme FB page

Don't English me, I panic!

The train scene! Image from Heneral Luna Meme FB page.

Sobrang common mistake 'to.) Nagtataka ako at bahagyang nalulungkot dahil may mga Pilipinong ayaw mag-Tagalog dahil mahirap daw. English na lang daw. Naalala ko ung isang batang naka-usap ko minsan. Ang galing nya mag-English, very fluent. Sinabi nya, "Teacher, I don't like speaking in Tagalog. It's so hard. Let's just speak in English." Then I told her, "You can speak in Tagalog. Pilipino ka eh! It's in you, it runs in your blood." :) Ayun, she agreed naman. :)

Kailangan in English? Oh my goodness!  Image from Heneral Luna Meme FB page.

I remember one time when I was in Korea, may naka-usap akong student dun. Parang ang tanong ko sa kanya, "What is your least favorite subject?" At ang sagot nya, Korean Language. Mahirap daw eh. Hmmm. :)

Oh my goodness! Image from Heneral Luna Meme FB page.

Who's your mama now?
Si Mother Luna at Mother Aguinaldo. I also noticed yung mga pagkaka-iba nila sa pelikula. Hmm, harsh... Sa kabilang banda si Mother Luna. Mukhang yayamanin din sya pero fierce! For me she was portrayed there as someone who is a strong woman pero gentle pa rin (Ikaw ba naman na dalawa sa anak mo naging bayani) Andun pa rin ang pangaral nya sa bunso nya. Andun yung naglalakad sila sa bakuran nila. Hindi sya fully sold out sa desisyon ng anak nya to be in that war pero andun pa rin ang suporta at gabay nya. :)

Antonio Luna was also a Thomasian just like Jose Rizal. Go USTe! :) Image from Heneral Luna Meme FB page.

Yaya Dub, Pastillas Girl... Ensaymada Girl! Hoho!  Image from Heneral Luna Meme FB page.

Juan Luna's Spoliarium painting shows fallen gladiators being dragged and stripped off of their armors and even their social status. They were warriors, pero yung death nila is something not honorable. They died just for the entertainment of the Romans. Hindi ako sure kung bakit ginaya ung last scene wherein Luna's and Paco's bodies were dragged na mala-Spoliarium. Siguro it can be something na, kung hindi tayo umunlad sa pagiging Pilipino natin, ung death nila could be just a waste or something not honorable, gaya nung mga gladiators na nasa painting.

May eksena nga run when he was caught in the middle of the battle tapos tinamaan yung right hand nya. I was like, "Oh no hindi na sya makakapagsulat..."

Ok yung idea na may fictional character sa movie na 'to to whom, I think, majority of the viewers can relate with.  Image from Heneral Luna Meme FB page.

Yung watawat ng Pilipinas na nasa backdrop ni Luna whenever Joven is interviewing him, habang tumatagal lalong pumapangit.

Bakit? Bakit kapwa Pilipino pa? :( Image from Heneral Luna Meme FB page.

Nawa'y mas dumami pa ang ganitong klaseng pelikula. Yung may social relevance and speaks about our History. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching rom-com movies.

I seriously thought Alden's breakthrough in his career would be yung role nya as Rizal sa primetime series na Ilustrado. :(  Image from Heneral Luna Meme FB page.

Yes, the Filipino can!
Thank God that Fernando Ortigas agreed to produce this film! The script was originally written in English and was even banked for 17 years!

Ayokong maging reklamador dito. I don't want to be part of those people na panay reklamo sa bansa pero wala namang magandang tinutulong o solusyon na pinre-presenta. And let's guide our next generation. "Forgive and Forget", tama yan. Pero sa History, forgive but never forget. Dahil kung nakalimot tayo, History will just repeat itself.

:)  Image from Heneral Luna FB page.

The Artsy Fartsy Challenge Part 3

Yikes! I completely forgotten about posting the last batch of this challenge here in my blog (yeah, it ended over a month ago). So I'm just going to post them here (even though it's so late) because I said that I'm going to. :)

The first and second part of this challenge was posted here and here, just in case you want to check it. :)

Day 11
♫ Christ is enough for me / Christ is enough for me / Everything I need is in You / Everything I need... I have decided to follow Jesus / No turning back / No turning back ♫ -Christ Is Enough by Hillsong
This was my LSS song during this time. :) Beautiful song indeed!

Day 12
How to achieve your dreams? A balance between passion and compassion... lead and love. :) Both the heart and the mind must be used. :) A tidbit of wisdom on this one!

Day 13
I remembered a quote that goes, "Bloom where you planted." Sometimes (if not, most of the times), we don't "bloom" where we are right now because we are so caught up with this another quote that goes, "The grass is always greener on the other side." That we will be happier or more contented if we are in a different circumstance. Why not thrive where you are right now? You could have been missing the best things in your season right now because you are itching to go out from it!

Day 14
This artwork is for our kids church lobby window design for Easter Sunday. Got inspired with stained glass artwork! :)

On paper...

On glass windows (used poster paints)

Day 15
Oh yes, who could forget that animated movie, Up? This is the only cartoon movie that got me crying just about 5 minutes after it started! A very touching movie... I can watch it over and over again (same goes for Kung Fu Panda movies and Finding Nemo haha!) I'm having that throwback memory and I have to think of a lesson for my students (I have a part-time/freelance job as an art teacher for kids) for their coming art session with me during this time. So I thought that it's just also fitting for my Day 15 artwork. ♥

"That might sound boring, but I think the boring stuff is the stuff I remember the most." -Russel

So there you go, done with my self-induced Artsy Fartsy Challenge! I'm thinking of giving myself yet another art challenge but a different one from this. :) Maybe a little related to fashion? Hmmm... :)

Starting Young(er)

It was really a blessing and a privilege to attend the Every Nation Campus Conference: Ignite 2015 last June 2-4 at Smart Araneta! Honestly I still have my coarse voice due to too much singing and shouting hehe :)

Ignite season again!

Not only that, but I was also blessed to attend the Ignite Pre-Con last June 1, 2015 at the CCF Center in Pasig (thank you CCF! God had really blessed you with awesome facilities!) Got to spend time with my "great cousin" and some delegates from Victory Cagayan De Oro and finally met again my friends from Cambodia! ♥

CDO and Cambodia represent!
We have this sort of war cry, "Change the campus! Change the world!" for we believe that when we reach the students for God in the campus, who are the future leaders and decision makers of nations, then we can mold and change the world as early as today!

But this post will be more about the connection between Campus Ministry and Kids Ministry. :) I used to volunteer in Campus Ministry in our church for a time but today, I'm more involved in World Missions and yes, Kids Ministry. :)

Few days before Ignite 2015, I got to talk to a friend and co-volunteer in Kids Ministry who is also greatly involved in Campus Ministry in the university where she graduated. Now she's having this dilemma if she have to let go of this ministry so she can focus more to this other ministry. I told her to pray more about it, that she will really hear God's voice and guidance about it. I also added that Kids and Campus Ministries are not really from different "planets". Kids are more of like Campus only that you are starting to reach out the students in their much younger age.

Then fast forward to Ignite 2015 Day 2. The speaker was Ms. Rachel Ong, Founder and Chief Executive of ROHEI, a management consultancy based in Singapore and who is also involved in our Every Nation church in Singapore. This woman has a string of achievements, and one of them is she got a scholarship in Harvard (wohow!) But she told the crowd (around 15,000 of us inside Araneta) that when she was still a child, she wasn't really doing well in school. She shared to us that whenever her mother introduce her and her sister to people, her sister would have a 10-minute introduction because she's good in a lot of things. But to her she will just say, "This is Rachel. She has a good heart." :) Her teachers would always comment that she's a "good girl but very slow".

Some words of wisdom from her last Ignite 2015

So what happened to her? From being this "good but slow" girl to becoming a successful and wise lady that she is right now, influencing many people from different nations?

Then she continued her story. One day she approached her Sunday School teacher (Tadah! That's Kids Ministry in there!) and asked how can she do better in school for she just entered highschool. And what her teacher said, I believe, was her turning point in becoming the bright student (can't still get over with that Harvard scholarship!) that she was. She told her that if she wants to do well in school, she have to read the Bible, memorize Scriptures and meditate on the Word of the Lord. She did exactly what her Sunday School teacher told her-- read the Bible, memorize Scriptures and meditate the Word... and the rest is history. :)

I can somewhat relate to her on that part. I was not really doing well at school when I was a little girl. I can still remember a classmate of mine before bullying me and calling me "stupid" during that time. But then I remember my mother telling me to memorize Bible verses, not so because I can do well in school, but because it is the Word of the Lord. She told me that there's power in it, that I can quote the Bible whenever I pray. So to do that, I should memorize the Scriptures then. So, I started memorizing Bible verses. I remember reading them aloud so I can easily remember them. Then eventually, I started to do well in school. I remember myself being surprised seeing my name in our school's bulletin board being the top 3 of our class. From then on the class and teachers would assign me to lead, they would make me represent our class in some competitions and get awards. I was doing well until I went to collage while still being active in extra-curricular activities. Now I firmly believe that this had happened, not because I'm so great but because God's Word is faithful and true.

"Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers."
-Psalm 1:1-3

It is good that we reach the students when they are in campus, but it is better when we start reaching out to them when they are younger. :)

Start them young!
Ms. Rachel's story about her and her Sunday School teacher was just a tiny-winy part of her whole session, but it struck me and reminded me being a Kids Ministry teacher myself that I could be raising some Rachel Ong today. What could be the result if her Sunday School teacher's answer was different? What could be the result if my mother did not tell me to memorize Bible verses? We maybe remained as the "good girl but very slow" and "a girl bullied as stupid in school" (only that we are bigger and older now hehe). God is faithful for He put godly and grown-up people to guide us. You could be that "godly and grown-up" person for many kids around you. Who knows what could that kid be when he/she grows up? Remember that David was only a shepherd boy when he was anointed as king of Israel. :)

For the whole session of Ms. Rachel about "Influence The World" (which is really powerful by the way!), you can hear it here by clicking the image for the link:

Ignite 2015 Day 2: Influence the World
Session 5 by Rachel Ong
So there you go, whether you are in Campus Ministry or Kids Ministry... You can change the world now! :D

The Artsy Fartsy Challenge Part 2

Almost there! Posting my Day 6 to 10 artworks for my self-induced art challenge! :) Other than sweaty hands, this challenge so far is doing me good! Haha! :) Most of my artworks for this batch are more on typography, and yes most of them are lyrics from songs that had been playing on my head for these past days! ;)

Day 6
Not this one though! Obviously it's not a typography art haha! :) I was helping my sister do some accessories to sell it online (yep, these are on sale! ^^). But the item's on the left is already sold, though... Yeah! :) For more items, you can visit my sister's online store on eBay- Diaspora Shop. Most of the items for sale here are first-rate health and beauty products from the Philippines, drop buy when you can! :)

Day 7
♫ This girl is on fayaaarrrr! ♫ You're probably thinking about that Alicia Keys song that became popular a few years ago, but this one was not a product of a LSS (Last Song Syndrome). I was listening to a podcast preaching of Ptr. Steven Furtick of Elevation Church that talked about passions and desires. The youth is generally passionate and full of desires, and when not guided, they could channel these to ungodly deeds that result to guilt, shame and brokenness. Since it can't be tamed, why not just put these passion and desires for the pursuit of God? Hearing that, this phrase crossed my mind. I'll be a "girl on fire" for God! :)

Day 8
♫ God is fighting for us / Pushing back the darkness / Lighting up the Kingdom that cannot be shaken / In the name of Jesus, enemy's defeated / And we will shout it out / Shout it out ♫
I was listening to the song of Darlene Zschech- In Jesus' Name for the whole day (yep, I was playing it on loop! ^^) This song's very encouraging, definitely a pick-me-up-for-I-am-feeling-down song! :)

Day 9
Random. Just plain random! Haha! I just remembered a shampoo TV commercial before and it got a song that became trending during that time. Yes, it's just that... :)

Day 10
I drew Brooke Fraser this time but I think I didn't draw her very well hoho... ;)
♫ There's something in the water that makes me love you like I do / Doo / Doo doo doo / Doo doo doo doo doo... ♫ :) from her song, Something In The Water. (Warning: Get ready to be hooked with this song once you've heard it!)

Image reference here :) Just a screencap from her Something In The Water music video.
The story behind this... After the 5pm Sunday service in our church, they started playing some Brooke Fraser songs and I was like... "That's my playlist too!" :D She also composed/written some of my all-time favorite Hillsong pieces like, You'll Come, None But Jesus and Hosanna. She wrote the songs that I feel I've been wanting to sing for God... Yeah, that's a God-given talent indeed. :)

=============================================

That's it for now, 5 days to go! :)

The Artsy Fartsy Challenge

Few days ago, I gave myself a self-induced challenge and called it the "Artsy Fartsy Challenge". The challenge is this, for 15 days I have to make at least one artwork in a day. My reasons are pretty simple... Number 1 is so I will not get tired, lazy or dormant with the talent that was given to me by God (I also believe in the saying, "If you'll not use it, you'll lose it."), and the other one is because I also believe that practice makes bongga. :) ("Bongga", for those who didn't understand this word is an informal Filipino word that could mean "Great" or "Superb"). ;) I also try styles and stuff that I haven't did before or did for a very long time.

Sharing the artworks that I did for the past 5 days (Sorry for the low-res pictures. I'm still praying for a new phone with a bongga camera with it ^^).

Day 1
Used black pens with felt tip on paper. I just draw on paper whatever things, words or images that crossed my mind during that time. It's like a... umm... "vomit artwork" (for lack of good terms) ;) Sometimes random things can make a beautiful whole picture when they are put together.

Day 2
Used black pen with needle tip on paper. I was watching the PBA All-Star Games during this time and was very entertained with the Slam Dunk competition. :) You know, inspirations can come very randomly to you! ;) I haven't drawn a man's anatomy in action for a very long time so I think it's just a right time making one. :) I searched for an action shot from the internet and copied it.

Day 3
Ballpens with black and red inks were used for this one on paper. I copied it from a shawl that my aunt gave me that got eagle heads all over it. A Bible verse crossed my mind before drawing this eagle head--
Isaiah 40:31- "But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint."

Just a trivia about how an eagle soars. The eagle is the only bird (correct me if I'm wrong) that can fly ABOVE the clouds. It means the eagle can fly above the storms. It means if you "soar like an eagle", you can soar above your troubles (not soar away from them but soar above them). Waiting or trusting in the Lord will give you that strength to soar on wings like an eagles.

And yep, I've read this Bible verse several times before making this artwork (from my own Bible reading, from a friend's text message, a Facebook status, etc.! This could be a Word of God for me or for you my dear reader. :)

Day 4
Oil pastels and black ink on paper were used in this one. This is one of the days wherein there's no enough inspirations and I don't feel like doing it. Indeed feelings are not always right and could be very unstable... Now that's the time wherein commitment and diligence should kick in, bringing it over your feelings to stay true to what you've decided. I read a definition of "commitment" during the time I attended the World Vision Loyal Donor Dinner last year and it got stuck on my mind since then-- "Commitment is staying loyal to what you have said... Even when the mood already left you on the time you said it."

From you hands are much opportunities and possibilities... don't let yourself miss those just because you don't feel sticking on your commitment. Much realization for this simple artwork haha!

Day 5
The latest one, watercolor on paper (paper specially used for watercolor). This is not the initial artwork that I made for day 5 for the first artwork that I made for this day is something that I didn't really like haha! It didn't turn out the way I wanted it to be. It's like a "vomit artwork" too but this time it didn't look very pleasing unlike the artwork that I made for day 1. Watercolor is really not my forte and I have to practice on this medium more than any other.

Some realization for this one, or maybe a reminder, that for something to be beautiful you gotta put more time for it. Now that's the difference between my "vomit artwork" day 1 from my "vomit artwork" supposed-to-be-for-day-5... Time. Yep, I put just random things on paper before BUT it took me a long time to finish it, unlike my supposed-to-be-for-day-5 artwork wherein I just put some random colors on paper in a much shorter time (not to mention that the medium that I used is something I'm not used in using).

So how will I apply it to other areas of my life??? Haha! Well here it is (and maybe you can also apply it to your own life, too) Time makes things beautiful or makes them MORE beautiful... or you can say it this way, "Waiting can make things beautiful..." for rushing some things can make them ugly even though they're supposed to be beautiful. And don't rush things just because you just have to do it, put some lovin' in it. You know that there's much lovin' in someone's work or effort if he/she took more time in pulling it off, not because this person's a perfectionist freak, but because he/she wanted it to become "great" from "okay". :)

=====================
Will be sharing the rest of my artworks and the inspirations and realizations that comes with them in the following days. :) Now, this self-induced challenge is more than just an art challenge to me. :)

White, Navy Blue and Ombre Pink!

It was the wedding of my two good friends from Kids Ministry, Edrick and Mich last February 7, 2015 at Tagaytay. :) I was part of the creatives prep-team (yey!) but most of the ideas are from the bride herself (kudos to my friend, Mich!).

It was surprisingly hot when we were preparing the venue (feels like summer, honestly!) but we considered it as a blessing from God since there were news that it could rain that day. :) Most of it are DIY and yes, labor of love! ♥

Here comes the bride! ♥

Ombre pink aisle markers were the bride's idea. Lovely! :)

Angel's breath on the aisle entrance added a touch of romantic taste
This aisle marker was made of little flowers stuffed on a styro ball.
